(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) School_Homwork_MomSon.jpgWe have many options for educating children in our area.  We have public schools that include programs such as gifted and talented, career and technical, International Baccalaureate, advanced placement, and dual credit.  We have private schools that focus on different teaching philosophies such as Montessori, Classical, and Charlotte Mason.  In addition to these options, home education continues to grow.

Is homeschooling legal?  Yes.  In the state of Texas, home schools can legally operate as private schools.  The Home School Legal Defense Association provides a legal analysis of homeschooling law in Texas.

Whether you choose public school, private school, home school or some combination along your journey, it is good to have such a great variety of choices.

Home School Support Groups & Co-ops

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) MomKidsWalking.jpgThere are many resources for help with homeschooling.  Support groups often have group meetings giving you an opportunity to meet other homeschool families.  They often have speakers that talk about a variety of topics such as homeschooling laws, curriculum choices, educator discounts and more.  Some groups are more loosely structured with an online group format, casual park play dates with the children and coffee shop dates for the moms.  Many groups coordinate field trips and have co-ops.

Some co-ops offer enrichment classes such as chess, cooking, sewing and music.  Others offer academic classes like Texas History, English and Math.  These co-ops are usually lead by a group of parents with some of the parents teaching while others serve in support roles.

Some groups in our area:

Arlington Association of Home Educators Dallas Christian Home Educators
Christian Homeschool Alliance of Texas Home Educators Alliance for Resources and Training of Texas, Inc.
Christian Home Educators of Arlington Mansfield Homeschoolers
Classical Conversations Matthew Road Home School Group

Other Home School Classes & Programs

In addition to home school support groups and co-ops, there are also many other classes and programs available to homeschoolers.  These organizations may also offer classes and programs to all, but have specific classes during the day targeted to homeschoolers.
