It is important to realize that the only way to get something done is to do the something that needs to get done. One can take a task and break it down into smaller tasks in order to get it accomplished in a timely manner. "To do" lists can help.
There is also a list of questions one can ask to identify nonproductive, time wasting activities:
- What would happen if this were not done at all?
- Which of the activities on my list could be done by somebody else just as well, if not better?
- What do I do that wastes my time without contributing to my effectiveness?
Over the years I have learned better to just put one foot in front of the other. I cannot just sit around and think about how difficult a project is, or how little time I have to do the project. I must simply put one foot in front of the other trying to do the best I can do in order to complete the task.
Breaking tasks down into smaller tasks to be accomplished in a timely manner helps me with my planning. I like to understand how long it may take me to complete a task, and divide it among the number of days I have before the deadline. This helps me stay on track.
I also like the idea of making a list, and then marking off my accomplishments. It is like getting a little reward along the way of accomplishing all my goals for the day. In addition, it serves in letting me know where I am in regard to completing tasks throughout the day.
Asking myself questions like the above are also very good tools for keeping on track. It may take a little time to stop and think about the questions. Nonetheless, the time is well worth it if it saves time long term.
